Intelligent Systems

Institute of  Computer Science III

At the Department of Intelligent Systems (Institute of Computer Science III) at University of Bonn, we focus our research and development on the creation of algorithms and software for the next generation of truly intelligent machines.

Following the digitization of society and economy, our central working hypothesis is that such intelligent machines should be created by making use of the enormous and growing wealth of data that is available about the world ("Big Data") in combination with intelligent algorithms that are capable of learning from such data in order to draw smart conclusions.

Our research agenda therefore encompasses the entire intelligent data and learning chain: data storage and linking with database and linked data methods, data analysis and pattern recognition with machine learning/deep learning algorithms, and the creation of intelligent systems in business and other application areas such as computer vision. Our work thus contributes to strongly developing fields such as Cognitive Computing and Artificial Intelligence.

Partners

At the Institute of Computer Science, we intensively collaborate with b-it, the Bonn-Aachen International Center for Computer Science at University of Bonn (soon to move into the same building as we are), and teach in its study programs Media Informatics and Life Science Informatics.

Many of us are also co-opted at the Fraunhofer IAIS, the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems, together with which conduct a lot of our applied research. We also have close co-optations with  City University of London..

Location

Physically we are currently located on the R├Âmerstrasse Campus of University of Bonn, but will move into the brand new computer science building on the Poppelsdorf campus this fall (2016). b-it will then also be located in the same building.
